Out of the box, this is a great product. Here are the goods.

1. Small
2. No external power needed
3. Simple connection

That's it. Open the box, take out the cable, hook it up and you're ready to record your awesome video game footage within 15 minutes. Also, there's no install CD included with this product. You need to go to this site and download the latest recording software.

Now, after testing this product, I found one problem. It might be the cause of my connection or a known problem which is being worked on by Elgato.

My connection is through component cable as I own an older Xbox360 system that does not have a HDMI output. (The newer Xbox360 has HDMI output)

[Out Of Sync]
My Xbox360 is set to 1080p and Elgato software is set to 720p. There is a 1 second video lag meaning the audio is 1 second faster. Tried it with Elgato software set to 1080p but same 1 second vdeo lag problem exists.

Firmware used is the latest as of Dec 4th, 2012. Beta 1.2xxxx. Also, when the Xbox360 display setting is set to 1080p, the preview window in the Elgato software is laggy and goes black after a while. However, if the Xbox360 display is set to 720p, no problem with the preview window.

(*) BTW, after uploading the clips and viewing it, it seems the Out Of Sync video looks like it's in sync. Kinda weird as it is out of sync when I play it back on my computer. (i7-2600, Win 7 SP1, HD6870 1G, RAM 16G, ASRock Z68 MOBO)

Out of curiosity, I tried some other video players for playback of the recorded footage to try and see if the video lag was persistent.

. GOM Player : 1 second video lag.
. Windows Media Player : 1 second lag.
. Adobe Premiere Elements 11 : no lag. in sync.
. Youtube (uploaded) : no lag. in sync.

So, I don't know if this is a bug or not. I have a farely fast computer atm and never had movie/video playback problems.

On another note, when the Xbox360 display is set to 1080p and the game capture hd set to 1080p, the preview screen shows the Xbox360 dashboard for a few minutes (but laggy) and then suddenly goes black. I'll have to come back and give you guys an update on this after fiddling with it a bit more.

The Elgato Game Capture HD has to be the simplest way to record from your Xbox or PS3. I would definitely buy another one if mine ever gets stolen or lost. It is small but very powerful. It is easy to use and practically anyone can use it. The software is great. Had some issues but customer support on both Twitter, Facebook and email seemed to respond in a timely matter and addressed my concerns. You won't regret purchasing this product!

This is my first game capture device and I could not be happier with it. The set-up was relatively easy, the video quality is great, I've experienced no audio lag (as some others have complained about), and the editing features built-in to the software make reviewing and editing easy.

A couple notes - when I ordered I missed the fact that it requires Windows 7, so I had to upgrade from Vista to use it. I upgraded to Windows 8, and it works fine with it. The system requirements also specify 4GB of ram - I'm running it with 3GB on a desktop PC with a processor that's just above the stated basic requirements, and I'm having no problems with it.

So far I've mostly been using it for reviewing gameplay videos and grabbing screenshots. The screenshots look good, though the only option as best I can tell is to initially save them to the desktop, which is a little annoying.

I did try uploading one video directly to YouTube, using the "Upload to YouTube" option in the editing software, and ended up with an error. I have not tried a second time and this very well may have been a fluke or more about my internet connection than the software. Saving the video to MP4 then uploading to YouTube through the YouTube website has worked fine.

I use this to record gameplay for my YouTube channel and the quality is amazing. You see videos all over the place with the HD PVR and how you need to adjust color settings in editing software to truly give it that HD look. Using the Elgato I have never had to do that. The video is in amazing HD right from the recording, and the new features in the software update are incredible.

I bought this as a successor to my Hauppauge HD PVR and this is much easier to use, has better quality and I have experienced no problems with it's software on my MacBook Pro.

xbox has a weird problem in component where it black screens in the friends list and when xbl avatars are on screen, very bizaar but works fine.

This product was what I expected and a hell of a lot more. No gripes other than the fact that the software is pretty lackluster, not much you can do if you edit videos. Make sure you have a movie editing program installed and you're in luck.

At first I was a little worried this would not work with my computer. I thought my computer wouldn't be able to keep up with HD but this device works amazing. Even on my slow computer I can record in 1080i with no problem. Right now I do want to say that it can not record any higher than what its outputting to (my TV is only 1080i). I usually use 720p for most my general videos because on a slower computer it will take a fair amount of time to export higher quality videos but the quality and clarity of the videos are amazing.

The Elgato is a GREAT way to record games! I found out that you do not need an HDMI port to use this. You can also select S-Video, to record only using the RCA Jacks. This product records in good quality, simple to use, and the flashback is great! I love it!

My personal view o nthe El Gato is that this item is great for people who have both PS3 and Xbox360. I records really good HD Gameplays. If your a ps3 user Elgato sends you the cord needed to record with ur ps3 so unlike the PVR dont have to go out spend another $15-33 each on set of HD AV cables for both systems. It is about the size of a iphone, Powered by USB that plug into your pc or labtop. Xbox hooks up in HDMI Cables. Elgato also gives your their own recording/Edit tools program you can download free off their website. My only down fall on this is if wanna do commentary you will still have to buy a mic spefically for the PC, cause elgato does not capture and record your own voice only gameplay and online players voices.

I originally ordered the Roxio Game Capture HD Pro for the cheaper price...terrible decision. I ended up returning it and after talking to several users of the Hauppauge HD PVR 2 and the Elgato, I decided to go with the Elgato because it is clearly better. It is an amazing product, I love it.

I bought this one few days ago, and just finished recording my first game play on PS3. The video clip is crystal clear as it was on my TV, 8:30 video in 720p is about 730MB. The setup is so easy, just set the video out to "Component / D terminal" and audio out to "Audio Input Connector / SCART / AV Multi" , then the picture and audio is in perfect sync. The video editing is very easy as well, one click sharing to youtube is definitely sweet. There is no delay of the video pass through, but just keep in mind to set the video output back to hdmi before unplug the usb cable since this device wont transfer the video to TV if it's not connected to a PC.

Although this is advertised as a capture device for console games in HD quality, this little box is more than capable of recording the video and audio of ANY HDMI based output.

In the past, I had used FRAPS to record my PC Gaming videos, but this uses my computers resources, thus lowering the framerate of my gameplay to 15-20, enough to notice. I had purchased this as an alternative to a new monster gaming computer, temporarily using a console in lieu of a capable machine. However, with my mini (micro?) HDMI output on my video card, I can change my video/audio output to HDMI and record my PC screen directly, without slowing ANY performance on the gaming side/framerate.

Best EASY solution I have found for this.

Very easy to set up. Software is easy to operate. If not careful you will fill your HDD quickly. Only complaint, which is not really a complaint, is that you have to disconnect it to run certain apps, like Netflix, because it block copy righted items. Understandable, but frustrating to juggle cables.

Okay, after having quite a bit of trouble with other game capture devices, i decided to try out this "Elgato." With a name like that for some reason i wasn't taking it seriously. Now, i've only done a few short tests, but so far this device is just the best!

Mostly, i bought it for the Wii U. Since this is advertised as being for 360/PS3 i wasn't sure if it would work, but it works well. Plug the HDMI from the Wii U to the Elgato, and another from the Elgato to the TV. Records 1080p at 29.97fps, i don't see an option for 59.97fps but that's no problem.

I also have an original Xbox 360 with no HDMI, only component cables. I had no plans to use the Elgato with it, but it turns out i can. They include a component cable adapter right in the box, and there's a separate port for it on the Elgato. It records 720p 59.97fps through the Xbox componant. I assume if i had HDMI Xbox it would do 1080p.

This means i can have my Wii U and componant 360 hooked up to the Elgato together, all the time. I couldn't be more excited! Just need to power everything down to swap between them, and adjust the input settings in the software.

Speaking of the software, i like it much better than others i have tried. It's simple. Light. Seems to work very well. I have not tried the editing options, but for recording it's very simple and just works.

For editing, i have tested it out in Sony Vegas Pro 10 and in Premiere Pro CS6. Both work perfectly, with audio perfectly in sync. No problems at all. Hopefully it stays that way with extended recording sessions. I'll update if i have any problems.

Overall, the Elgato has surpassed my expectations. Easy to set up. Smaller in size than i expected. You can use component as well as HDMI, even both together for two devices. Software is simple and light. Footage works perfectly in my editing programs. Couldn't ask for more!

Highly recommend Elgato to anyone who's had problems with "other" devices, or anyone not sure which game capture card to get!

In spite of the name and marketing being game-focused, this device worked great for capturing video from an iPad, even in 1080p.

The setup was easy, with the one catch being that the device also needs to be plugged into a TV for the signal to negotiate. Thankfully, Elgato has a page describing iPad capture in their support which made this trivial.

Another bonus: this device includes the HDMI, USB, and component cables, unlike some of the competition.

Its been awhile since i recorded gameplay messin around with all the cords and cables , The Elgato Game Capture HD is legit !!! Three cables and easy setup for recording ive so far recorded over 50 hours of gameplay in the 720 or 1080p formats its the best deal! So, i was looking around for awhile to find a good PVR to record my game sessions (PS3).

The Happaugh was just too expensive for my taste, and was overly complicated. The Elgato is not only cheaper, BUT it is a simple set up! On PS3 i cannot record in complete 1080p, but the 720 still looks beautiful and works for youtube. Everything you need is in the box, and gives you instructions of where to download the software (which is both free AND works on Macs, something cheaper Roxio ones cant do. I have a Mac, so Roxio wasnt an option). This capturing device WILL do you justice for the price. Not sold? well How about this... it offers a "rewind feature", meaning say you forgot to press record.. well you can simply go back in time with the software and start recording up to about an hour from when your currently live capturing. This feature is simple, easy, and GREAT for those moments you just didnt think you needed to press record for!

the only, and i mean ONLY downside is that in order to have my TV display the video, i have to have it plugged into my Mac. not a big deal for me, since its a Macbook, but for some people it may be a hassle, so its purely on personal opinion.

recommend this to anyone whos looking to record for Youtube. Really worth saving up for this, and it will last you until PVRs become obsolete :)

I originally bought this after looking for a 1080 recorder to use at a decent price. Elgato rated highly and once I got it I realised why, the small form factor means it sits quietly near your TV and no need for an external power supply. Setup takes seconds and works flawlessly when capturing footage.

The software that comes with it is pretty powerful for capturing and commenting on what is happening. If you record your voice through a microphone as an overlay to your gameplay when live streaming there is an approximate 3 second delay between what happens in the video and your voice being applied. There are work arounds I have found on YouTube, search for Elgato Streaming Delay, but it would make the software even better if Elgato added this option to sync video and voice correctly.

Only down side is that when trying to do live streaming to Twitch the feed breaks up and jumps on my Asus Laptop but that could be more the laptop spec than the Elgato.

This guy was super easy to use.

It also had the horsepower to record full speed HD video on the same computer I was recording from. They don't recommend this, but it worked fine. I am very pleased.

The hardware and software is top notch instead of cheap Chinese crap.

I spent a lot of time deciding between this and others, but since I have MacBook Pro, this was the best option. Software was simple and the setup is even easier. The only issue that I have is uploading straight to iMovie from the GameCapture Software. But I upload from the iMovie with no issues. All in all, a great buy

So I've had my Elgato Game Capture Card for about 2 months now but I was sold the first time I used it. I am an above average gamer and I was looking for something to really show off my talents. Now I just purchased a Macbook Pro right before this so seeing how the software for this card was compatible with my Mac really sold me. It's also a breeze to set up. It's a small card that has an AV in, IN and OUT HDMI ports, and a mini usb port to connect the card to the computer. Now because it's using HDMI native, the quality is superb. I record and export to Youtube and various other social media outlets @ 720p. It has a flashback feature that records my gameplay for up to 2 hours with out me hitting the record button, and allows me to go back and record that gameplay. With the 1.2 update for the Game Capture HD software, you are now able to add commentary and stream LIVE directly to TwitchTV from the app. The software also supports clip editing and exporting to various formats like iMovie(Mac), Youtube, even iPhone and iPad. This is by far the best feature of this software and device. Now this device isn't perfect and it wouldn't be far if I didn't tell you some of the setbacks. Due to the fact that the card does not have a separate power source and the set up of the HDMI cables, you have to turn on your computer in order to play whatever console you have connected to the card. Another snag is the capture card not being recognized by the software every now and then. It's not a big issue but it's worth mentioning. BTW, 99 percent of my usage with this device has been on a Macbook Pro 2.9 Dual-core i7 processor with 8GB of DDR3. From what I have read, this card works well with Windows 7 and Windows 8 as well. Bottom line: if you are in the market for a game capture card and want to get the best "bang for your buck", Elgato Game Capture HD will fulfill that need. My friends and I are still in high school and we came up with a few ideas for a machinima but we couldn't record without a game capture device. A great product, it records with great picture, the software works pretty good for editing kinda limited but you can trim stuff out so that's the main thing I need it to do. Can't beat the resolution it records makes this product superior, it does what it says but a great job of it.

Best cap card ever created! also with the new software update it now records 1080p and you can play in 1080p. Never again will i be using stupit component cables for a dumb pvr this is the best product by far. ( also new software update made it lag free) i recommend this product to everyone

Before i got the elgato.I was using my 2 year old roxio game capture and the quality was not bad but i always ran into audio and lag problem with it .So after using the elgato the only bad thing i noticed is when i try the play my xbox on the laptop screen it has a long delay but other than that it record in 1080 and the elgato is probably the best HD capture card made so far.

The built in streaming works well, if you want overlays and webcam support, then you can finally use Open Broadcasting Software (OBS). I've used this to capture Xbox 360 and Wii U games and both look great.
