Elgato Game Capture HD PlayStation 3/Xbox 360 Recorder for Mac and PC up to 1080P (10025010)
This device is simple and easy to use. Packaging is easy to access and everything including the device and cables are all packed in nicely. The box is wrapped in plastic and has a nice matte finish. It looks attractive with blue accents and opens up almost like a book. You are greeted with a large card which serves as the quick start guide for PS3 and Xbox 360 owners. There is a website on the back of the card as well, you will need to go there and download the necessary software in order to use this device. All cables and the device are wrapped in plastic.
Elgato built a very glossy recording device and it attracts dust easily, keep that in mind. It has rubber footing to keep it from moving around on whatever surface you put it on. The HDMI cable is shorter than I thought(3 ft.) The mini USB cable(not micro) is very long at 6.5 ft. For PS3 user(that's me) you have to use the included component adapter or the A/V cable. I think another reviewer mentioned the Xbox uses non-encrypted HDMI while the PS3's HDMI is encrypted. The software you download from Elgato's website is also easy to use. Large buttons for recording, playing, pausing, editing, and settings.
For my test(on the PS3) I used my small ASUS 1201N netbook. It has a dual core Intel Atom processor at 1.6ghz, Windows 7, and 4 gb of RAM, so I was a little confident. I recommend you meet the recommended CPU specs. I played Skyrim for 20 minutes and recorded 2 10 minute videos. My netbook did a good job, The sound quality of the audio as well as the video quality were very good. The input of my gameplay was 1280 by 720 at 59.95 fps and the output was at 1280 by 720 at 29.95 fps(It records up to 1080i). It takes like 20 seconds for my netbook to process the recordings in to MP4 files after I click on the stop recording button, stronger computers should process this faster, duh. I also used a 1 terabyte portable hard drive as a destination for my recordings.
If only it weren't all around super glossy, in conclusion, this is a very good product in a small package.
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program
I am giving this unit 5 Stars because it does work perfectly with my PS3
console. There are loads of reviews on here that go into great detail
on the Elgato so I wont bother add to that aspect of it. What I will
say is that I got this unit with the high hopes of using it to record
clips from my Satellite system for long term archiving, mainly news
clips because I love to see how historical news events are changed and
remolded over time. I semi suspected it would not work because the HDMI
signal might be encoded and that fear turned out to be true.So this was totally my fault and my assumption so I certainly will not blame Elgato for that since they made it pretty clear that encrypted HDMI signals would not work, but I had hoped that the signals where not encrypted and since I could find no information to say my provider used encrypted HDMI I decided to take a chance.
So my review is simply that the Elgato is a five star Game recording device but if you're hoping to record from your set top box you're wasting your time. And yes I do have a DVR, actually two of them but that does not help when you want to keep stuff for years because the drives in the DVR's become very cluttered and make daily usage very miserable and slow.
I bought this as a early xmas gift for my brother in Colorado. I didn't expect it to arrive as fast as it did.
Also, my bro uses it all the time for his PS3/Blackops 2 gaming on his HDTV. He is happy with i and has showed me quality videos from it. I would recommend it to others so far.
It's going to sound almost like I am paid to right this review. But this device is absolutely easy to use. set up had taken all of a minute, settings out of the box were great. then I learned how to access the device settings.... even better. Its just so versatile. the software could use some explaining. But I figured it all out in 5 minutes. and if you don't like to use their software for editing, export that bad boy. I had the file saved and uploaded to my favorite editor in seconds. One fair warning though, if you are doing HD video editing/capturing have external hard drives. after awhile, Managing and archiving raw HD footage, or even compressed HD data takes space. A good 2 TB external should do you no problems. Luckily, I have a lot of external hard drives I swap from my thunderbolt base. All in All, Great experience, and simple as all get out on OSX 10.8.1
This capture card has some if the sam recording qualities as most other capture cards, but there has been a recent system update for the recording software that now allows the user to do live commentary on a video they are recordig instad of using a 3rd party like Audacty. Even the editing software for the videos isn't all that great, but will not glitch out and is easliy compatible with programs such as Windows Movie Maker. Compared to other newer capture cards such as the Roxio HD Pro the Elgato wins hands down because I own both and i can't even get the Roxio to even work while the Elgato works perfectly. Also there are less cords to worry about and downloading the software is simple all you have to do is go to their website to download unlike the Roxio where you have to register the device, then create your account, then accept their terms of service, and then insert the program disc.
The Elgato is simple to use and has newer software for recording which gives it an edge against other capture cards which makes this a perfect choice for anyone wanting to start recording.
This is the ultimate solution for console capture. This device is even better for YouTube commentary. This device's recording quality is even better than what YouTube can display. Its small, easy to install and record gameplay, and has stunning video quality. Truly better than any Happauge, Avermedia, or Black Magic Intensity product.
This is a must have for game capture recording. It's so simple to use. The software is beautiful. I've done test videos on YouTube. Even after being rendered 2-3 times with software they look beautiful on YouTube. 1080i and 720p you can't beat it. You may need a USB extender that's the only con. BUY THIS YOU WON'T BE LET DOWN.
