Hauppauge
HD PVR 2 Gaming Edition High Definition Game Capture Device with HDMI
In and Out and Real Time Passthrough for Use with PC, Xbox 360 and PS3
This is great!!! I was searching for a game recorder for Ps3 & found this online 3 weeks before release date. I read a lot of reviews about the Elgato & Happauge HD-PVR 1 & chose this company. Pre-ordered for $161.14 no tax no shipping fees with 2 day free shipping. I love how I'm able to track my packages city/state by city/state online directly from websites(technology us 31 year olds don't take for granted). Took me 10 minutes to download software + setup hardware, but another hour to change my Ps3 from HD to Component, a Ps3 problem.
I've got the recording bitrate at its highest for Ps3, 12mb I believe(UPDATE: it's 14mb). Since I use a 4 month old HP laptop(and not a high powered PC), I edit MP4 HD videos in Sony Movie Studio Platinum 12 64-bit by converting the MP4 to MPEG-2 to edit, then render/publish by tricking Sony MSP 12 into thinking the MP4 is the MPEG-2 edit file(how-to-video on YouTube: [...]). I have only uploaded private YouTube videos cause I'm still playing with different settings for the Sony Movie Studio.
Sony has HDCP(High Definition Copy Protection), but the HD-PVR 2 allows you to record up to 1080i. Some games on Ps3 like Battlefield 3 is 720p whereas the Call of Duties are 1080p. But who watches 1080p on YouTube? It takes too long to stream. I'll download a YT video at 1080p, but I always watch at 720p(if option is available).
Included is a 9ft. USB cable for your PC/Laptop, I wish it was 12ft. but its long enough.
I don't know the quality of the 2 HDMI cables included in the box because I already had and use HDMI Amazon Basics, which are cheap & top quality.
I also purchased the Turtle Beach Earforce PX21 Headset for $65 no tax no shipping fees 2 Day free shipping since I needed a mic for video commentary, and its also great when playing multiplayer online!!! and offline.
Hope this review helps you in deciding between which companys' product to purchase.

----10/7/12 UPDATE!!!:
1. I had to update my graphics driver(AMD Radeon HD 6320) for my laptop because of bad playback flickering, problem solved free of charge. I record MP4 files, the format options are MP4, M2TS & TS.
2. A part of Hauppage! note included with shipment states, "...with ATI graphics boards: ATI has recently updated their graphics drivers which now cause flashing in ShowBiz. If you see this problem, uncheck the Hardware Acceleration button in ShowBiz." ATI is AMD, and mine flashes WHEN UNCHECKED, so I use Hardware Acceleration.
3. To record at 14mb you must go to Capture > Format Settings > Encoder, NOT Format Settings > Video Properties(the latter is only limited to 12mb). I have both the Bitrate & Peak Bitrate set at 14mb, and Bitrate Mode at Constant.
4. You can also record at 1080p for Ps3, search how-to on YouTube.
5. Just bought Sony Movie Studio Platinum Suite 12 from Amazon for $72.46 no tax free 2 day shipping!!! ALMOST HALF PRICE OFF - Sony's Website $125-30; Best Buy $130. The free ArcSoft ShowBiz, the software included that you use to record, also is a video editor--and it sucks!!. I suggest using another video editor & NOT Windows Live Movie Maker. Sony & every other company gives free trials.
----10/14/12 Ps3 UPDATE!!:
New Ps3 update for Windows 7/Vista/XP to record at 1080p (http://www.hauppauge.com/site/support/support_hdpvr2-gaming.html), I only tried ONCE recording MW3 at 1080p and it was too flashy.
got this product 2 days ago. the first thing that drew me to this product was was the good reviews on the first hd pvr and then i saw that second one and was like omg hdmi so i bought it. i havent had any problems installing the software the only problem i have ecountered is the youtube quality when it is uploaded using arcsoft showbiz. I think that it might be the settings that are on the product it self such as bit rate etc... if anyone has a fix to this please let me know. here is a link to a video so you can see for your self. The most incredible, easiest, quickest setup, and awesome result of any gaming recorder!!!
Never in my life recording a game could be this easy & fast!
The Quality is good, better than the first version of HD PVR.
Less cable, make it looks neat.
Smaller, makes it easier to put it anywhere.
I see a couple of 1 star for the review, and I can only say : "What were they thinking, coz this product is great!!."
Good Job for Hauppauge! And keep it up!
The capture card is awesome for Xbox. It has crystal clear quality but can be kinds confusing to set up.

I had been using a fake chinese EZcap, that cost about 5 dollars, for a few months now to record video for my Youtube channel, and it just was not cutting it so I finally decided to take the plunge and go HD. I looked up the Elgato, and the HD PVRs, all of which we're in my price range, and decided on the HD PVR 2 for both the price and the system requirements as my computer isn't exactly the best, (infact, it's an Acer Aspire 5336. It's terrible.) I don't regret it at all. The package got to my house extremely quickly, and the protection (air bags) were perfect for the size and weight of the PVR 2. It was extremely easy to set up, it's small and thus very easy to find a spot to put it among your electronics, and the quality is amazing. I recorded about 10 minutes of gameplay at 1080i (4MB/s) and it was roughly 800mbs, which is very easy on the HDD. Because my computer is terrible I don't work with 1080 however, I record at 720p, which was as easy as changing a setting on my Xbox, and about 20 minutes of gameplay (again at 4MB/s which is perfect for youtube, not so much for montage making) is about 1GB which is easily manageable. Also when you're not ready for it, and don't have the program open, the quick record button on the top is amazing. One downside however is that in order to use the pass-through feature, you have to both install the driver and program and run it once, and plug it into your computer every time. This isn't a problem for desktops, but for laptops that can be a bit... off putting... All in all I am very happy with it, and would recommend it to anyone, no problem.
Pros:
-Great quality
-Easy to set up
-Price vs Quality makes it way more than worth it
-Quick record button is amazingly helpful
-Has lowest system requirements of the similar capture devices.
Cons:
-Kinda lightweight, mostly plastic. Would be easy to break if you slam it around, which of course why would you?
(Probably best to unplug cords and put it away if there's a child in the house)
-The necessity of plugging it in to enable pass-through can be a bit troublesome if you're just wanting to play
(Which isn't a problem if its on a desktop desk and just left plugged in)
It works amazing and even comes with all the cords you need including 2 HDMI cables. But be warned it does need the computer to go along with it not a great one but just one that can handle 1080p.
Look & Feel:
The device looks pretty slick and has a slim profile to it. It is very light and does not take up much room at all. This is a major improvement over the previous version of the Hauppauge.
Setup:
Comes with easy to follow directions and all the cables you need which is aweosme that I didnt have to buy the HDMI cables separately. Everything went smoothly for me, I followed the directions, hooked up the cables in the order directed, and put in the installation CD to install the driver and software. Everything went great, there was only one hiccup where I was directed to the company website to install a newer version of the driver. Nothing failed, I recieved no error messages.
FYI here is my setup:
PC - Sager customized laptop
i7 3610M CPU
Intel 520 SSD, 120GB
Nvidia 680M GPU
16GB RAM
Windows 7 Home Premium
XBox 360
I even have the HDPVR routed through a 4x4 HDMI matrix (allows me to hook up multiple input/output devices to the matrix and easily switch among them with a remote rather than switching cables around)....and it still works great!
I experience zero lag while playing video games through the HD PVR 2.
Features/Customization:
There are lots and lots of configurations you can change to fit your needs. I am still exploring the menus but so far I see everything I need to capture HD video. I have done a few test videos and it looks great so it doesn't even seem like I will have to change much. This may be overwhelming to some folks, but if you just call tech support and let them know what you are trying to do, they will tell you exactly what configurations to choose!
Reaction to other ratings:
Hauppague is a great company with great products. There is pretty much a 50/50 split right now for 5 star and 1 star ratings. This seemed a little fishy to me when I ordered the product, I was worried there were goign to be issues. After my experience it is clear to me that the people giving it one star either A) dont know what they are doing and can't follow directions B) get frustrated very easily and run to their computers to write a negative review before trying to call tech support (who are very helpful by the way, CALL THEM! it is amazing how many people are reporting issues here but do not mention calling tech support...craziness...) C) have a unique computer setup or personal computer issue (which can be determined and fixed if you CALL TECH SUPPORT)
Conclusion:
Great price, great functionality, great support, excellent device
If you are having any kind of difficulty, just call tech support, they are great. They have people dedicating their time to go through reviews of the product and address issues through comments...if they are that helpful in a comment section without being contacted directly, imagine if you just call them yourselves!
