This device was perfect for what I was looking for. Play in HD while recording in semi compressed video. It's perfect for montage makers and others that like to record walk throughs with commentary. The only downfall is getting the right settings but it's pretty self explanatory. I've made a FIFA 13 montage already and I'm going to make a Halo 4 one when it releases.
Great device and the fact that it comes with all the cables and everything is a major plus. Just install and mess with some settings and you're ready to go.
I have a 1TB 7200 hard drive and it's plenty of space for storage along with the fact I rarely have any tearing or issues with my footage.
Worth the Price
So far (and I just got it today), this piece of equipment is stupid-proof. I'm pretty computer savvy and I enjoy my gaming consoles very much. I used a cheap, horrible something or other back in college for a bit and it was just awful.
Now I have this which takes all the hard work out of setup. You throw in the CD, install drivers and updated drivers, plug everything and BINGO, you're set. The software is clunky and sort of weird but it works. It's definitely more than enough to get you started. I basically capture on my old (like 2007? 2008?) Lenovo Thinkpad and then transfer it to my desktop to edit so the clunky software is only used to record and then I switch over to "Editing" software. To edit, I actually use Cyberlink Power Director which works well with the capture files (since I just used mp4, should be obvious.)
I used it for Xbox 360 and it works really well. Quality is excellent.
Much smaller than we anticipated and it runs great with our XBox/very easy set up. My son loves it--thank you very much for both the original PVR and the HD PVR 2 Hauppauge Digital!
Also I looked at el Gato and asked many questions about it. Ultimately I went with the PVR 2 because simply I was getting pretty much the same thing(without some portability) for 22$ less. I don't know about anyone else but 22$ is a lot of money!!
I really have no idea why people are complaining. When you put the disk that comes with it in your laptop or computer, It tells you to click on update drivers 1st then to download the actual software. It has hdmi in and out and the recording looks perfect. It does lag for me during the playback but that is because my laptop is old and has a lot of stuff on it but it has no effect on the actual recording at all. All in all this is really good compared to what I was using before (dazzle dvc 100) and I'm really happy about it.
great product for capturing no graphics issues software is a little trick to figure out but final got it to work for YouTube there is a little lag on the computer but not on the TV great sound and can be used with any component cables
This is not push and play like many standard video games(yes I know its not a video game counsel). I worked with my son and he really is the one who guided us through and he was happy with his end result. I thought the software was really hard to use and sketchy. Before purchase I read on here that Hauppauge was upgrading the software, the issue that kind of scared me to buy. We thought about an El gato but settled on Hauppauge(that is what he wanted). Because he is happy Ill stick with 5 stars but I can and will change this rating if he has any kind of problems at all within 10 days or the software upgrade does not come by end of January. One last comment. This is not easy for people who are not tech savvy. Thankfully my son is patient and used youtube for quite sometime before he had it going well. If this was mine I honestly wouldve gave up..and from what I have read in reviews...I'm not alone thinking this. Hauppauge should try to make it easy. Simple plug in and play/utilize) This is expensive.. it should be easier to use.
I originally got this to work with my Windows Media Center, after setting it up I discovered the gaming edition doesn't work with Windows Media Center on WIndows 7 or Windows 8 for recording TV. It appears the driver doesn't allow the device to be seen as a tuner?
I confirmed the issue with tech support as well.
While searching around the net I also discovered that Hauppauge just announced a HD PVR2 that will be available for Windows Media Center on Windows 7 and 8. I will most likely return this unit and wait for the model geared towards the home theater media center crowd available on Feb 1, 2013.

Other than that, the unit does works with the WinTV app(not included with this device, Gaming Edition) that you can download
off the Hauppauge site. Win TV can be used to schedule and record TV using the HD PVR 2. I personally prefer Windows Media Center at this time.
As for image quality, the image on the HD PVR 2 when compared to my Hauppauge HVR-1950(analog) unit is superior.
Much clearer(as its digital). I had both connected to my PC through USB 2.0 ports watching the same TV program side by side. The HDPVR2 on WinTV and the HVR-1950 on Media Center (Win8). The HVR-1950 looked as if you were looking through a cloudy/dirty window while the HDPVR2 was as crisp as you would expect with an HDMI digital source.
I still gave the unit 5 stars even though I did not hook my Xbox 360 to it. The improvement seen on the PC through USB 2.0 was convincing enough.
I love the Hauppauge HD PVR 2, it works perfect for recording my PS3 game play! I would recommend this product to anybody who wants to record their game plays to share with the world.
